Playing with my son on the floor and watching him as he observed a toy, smiling, making connections, and being in that moment, made me start thinking about the things I enjoyed, that helped me feel like me. Through spilt fruit loops, the giggles and hugs, the crying and laughter, I imagined how I was going to remain a playful and joy-filled mom to my children. That’s when Jollity and Pep began. One year into my motherhood journey and here I was exploring and experimenting with making things, seeing what fit and felt right. It took me five years to find my authentic artistic voice.
I realized that my children are not separate from this feeling of play and joy. It is them that have taught me most about myself as a mother, a wife, and an artist. How can I be a mom who continues to make art? Both, and. I don’t need to choose one or the other. I believe these are creative things made to be creative together; motherhood and creativity (#motherhoodandcreativity).
Before motherhood, I was a middle school art teacher. The important lessons I learned from that time in my life has helped me honor creativity in a new way with the messy, humbling, and beautiful moments throughout the day with my children. Designing brings me joy and I hope to sprinkle some joy into your everyday moments, too.
I’m so thankful you’re here.
